The Okmulgee Chamber of Commerce has announced the formation of a new summer festival, celebrating Freedom, Family, Food, and Fun. The new Okmulgee summer festival event will take place on Saturday, July 4th, 2009 and will be held at the Okmulgee Municipal Park, between 13th and 20th Streets. As with most July 4 celebrations, there will be fireworks and families can enjoy a blanket on the ground.
The Okmulgee Summer Festival is replacing the beloved 25-Year-Old Downtown Okmulgee Pecan Festival. Every June, the people of Okmulgee would get together and bake a pecan pie of Guinness Book of World Records size. Games, rides, concerts and more brought the young and old to downtown Okmulgee's historic town square. This old event is sure to be missed.

Just another nail in Okmulgee's coffin. As small towns struggle to keep their downtown businesses alive, ours seems to want the opposite.
As a former business owner, I know what a boon the Pecan Festival was to our downtown businesses. As other cities promote their assets and encourage visitors with city wide garage sales, antique stores and downtown festivities, our officials deny the fine qualities we do have such as a wonderful historical museum on a town square and quality antique stores. Okmulgee's downtown is going the same way as our old brick streets which are now covered with layer upon layer of asphalt and the railing posts on the Okmulgee Creek bridge on Delaware Street which are now is partially filled with concrete. Much faster than replacing the old fallen blocks of sandstone place there many years ago by dedicated laborers. It's a shame we have buried our historical past and a worse that shame we are denying Okmulgee prosperous future.

Who had this bright idea?
I think it's sad! I know my kids and I look forward to the Pecan Festival every year. Especially the turtle races. We are truly going to miss it. Someone said because they didn't have enough volunteers. Well, why didn't they ask the people of Okmulgee not just business owners if they want to volunteer to keep it alive. No one asked the people of Okmulgee, ones who live here, if they want to have it or not. I just think it's real sad!!
I don't know.. I think it might actually be a good thing. I've been doing a lot of research on Okmulgee's history, and many of the people that I've talked to seem to be excited about a lot of things that's happening here.
Only time will tell, but I think that they're planning on something bigger and better..
